An orientation was conducted by the Department of International Studies and History on 3rd January 2019, for selected students of HEP and EPS who have opted for writing a research paper in the 6th semester. The orientation which aimed at cultivating research skills and basic research methodologies was presided by the Director, Dr Fr Jose. He urged the students to cultivate research habits, as it has turned out to be the need of the hour. He encouraged students through his talk by providing example of inspiring personalities like Sachin Tendulkar on how practice can act as the basis of development. Hence he advised students to start developing research habits so as to flourish as a good research in the future. Dr Madhumati Deshpande, Coordinator of the department gave an overall introduction on what the orientation is all about and how the department has planned its further actions regarding the research orientation. Further the orientation was conducted by other faculties of the department, where Dr Anurag Tripathi, pitched in with the importance of research. He mentioned on how research can lead to an overall development of a student, at same time urged the need to develop writing skills among students. He explained what is a research and the benefits that one can receive out of doing research in such early stages of academic life. The orientation was further primed by Dr Vineeth Thomas, who covered areas of research design or research plan. He explained why is it necessary to follow a particular structure and a systematic method in order to come out with a successful outcome while doing a research. His orientation was more focused on how to do a research or steps involved while doing a research. He also highlighted on the importance of topic selection and formulation The authenticity of the research is a very important criteria, hence the sources, citations and references are key components of doing a research, these components and its basics were explained by Dr Ujjwal, concentrating on the need to avoid plagiarism and the quality of research.
Through this orientation, the students gained a basic knowledge of how to go about a research and what are the necessary tools for conducting a research at an undergraduate level. This would in turn act as platform for students to cultivate their research habits.
